Department Notes and Updates

The Chikaming Township Board, understanding the staffing issues facing police departments all over the state, approved the department’s Paid Cadet Program. This program will allow recruits to join the police department prior to appointment to the police academy. These recruits will start field training, and serve our community in various ways. Moreover, this program gives them an opportunity to feel out our great community and the department it serves to see if we are a good fit. Additionally, it gives the department an opportunity to assess whether the recruit will blend well and fit in with the culture of the department and the township. If the recruit is successful during the cadet training, they will be appointed to the police academy to start their basic police training. Once they graduate, they will again be placed in field training. If they are successful in field training, they will be appointed as patrol officers.

The good news is we have found two recruits who we believe will blend well and fit in with the culture of the department and the township. If they are successful in the cadet program, they will begin their police academy journey in January. We would like to thank our Township Board for all of their support of their police department. We will update our community on their journey through this process. Chikaming Township is truly a great place to work!
